💰What higher interest rates mean for your money

Hi there,
About a month ago, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates. And while most people probably didn't pay much attention, that decision could have a real impact on your money. Here's why.
When interest rates go up, borrowing money can become more expensive.
Credit card interest rates may rise. New car loans and mortgages can become more expensive. And if you're carrying high-interest debt, that's not exactly good news.
But there's a silver lining.
Higher interest rates can also benefit people who are saving money. Banks may offer more competitive rates on high-yield savings accounts (HYSAs), giving your savings an opportunity to earn more interest.
Think about it. If you have $10,000 sitting in a traditional savings account earning 0.01% APY, you're making practically nothing. But at 4% APY, that same $10,000 could earn roughly $400 in interest over a year, assuming the rate stays the same.
That's extra money without having to work another hour.
Of course, HYSA rates don't automatically increase whenever the Fed raises rates. Every bank sets its own rates, and they can change over time. But that's exactly why I always encourage people to compare their options.
You could use these recent rate hikes to your advantage. Here's what I'd focus on:
- Pay down expensive debt. Especially credit cards with high or variable interest rates.
- Review your savings. Don't leave your emergency fund sitting in a traditional savings account earning next to nothing.
- Compare HYSA rates. Look for competitive APYs, low fees, and FDIC insurance.
- Keep saving consistently. Whether it's $50 or $500 a month, the habit matters more than chasing the perfect rate.
I've always believed that building wealth isn't just about making more money. It's about making smarter decisions with the money you already have.
And with interest rates still an important part of the financial picture, now is a good time to make sure your savings are working as hard as they can.
