When I was younger, I thought getting rich was all about making more money and spending less. And while those things are important, becoming a millionaire in my 20s taught me something else.

Some of the biggest financial decisions you'll ever make have nothing to do with what you buy.

Think about it. You can spend hours finding ways to save $20 on groceries.

But one bad financial decision could cost you tens of thousands of dollars over the next decade.

Here are five decisions I'd pay much closer attention to:

1. The career you choose.

Your earning potential is one of your biggest financial assets. Choosing a career that rewards valuable skills can make a huge difference in how quickly you build wealth.

2. The person you build a life with.

You don't need to marry someone wealthy. But you should be with someone who shares your financial values. It's much harder to build wealth when you're constantly fighting over money.

3. Where you choose to live.

A bigger house or luxury apartment might feel like success, but housing is usually one of your largest expenses. Keeping it manageable gives you more freedom to save, invest, and enjoy life.

4. The debt you take on.

A $700 car payment or an expensive degree without strong career prospects can limit your financial options for years. Always think about the long-term cost before signing anything.

5. The people you surround yourself with.

I've learned that your environment influences your ambitions.

Spend time with people who encourage you to learn, grow, and take action.

Not people who make you feel like improving your life is something to be embarrassed about.

Here's my point. You can't build wealth by only focusing on the small stuff.

Yes, track your spending. Yes, compare your insurance.

Yes, stop wasting money on things you don't need.

But don't become so focused on saving $5 that you ignore decisions that could change your entire financial future.

The biggest financial wins often come from making a few important decisions really well.

Choose carefully. Your future self will thank you.
