💰Paying Only a Fraction of My Hospital Bill
Jul 16, 2025read time 2 minutes
Hi,
I reduced a hospital bill from $2,000 to $500. Here’s how.
In America, your physical health can cost you your financial health, but I have consistently saved hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, on every hospital bill by doing a few simple things. It all started with one disastrous night.
If you knew me back in college, you’d know I went through a pretty reckless phase. Sure, I was working multiple side hustles and figuring out my financial journey, but as college kids do, I was also partying quite hard.
One night, I drank so much that I completely blacked out, and my friends ended up calling an ambulance to get me. An ambulance that cost thousands of dollars for a broke college kid who couldn’t tell his parents why he needed an ambulance. After I regained consciousness, I was slapped with a $2,000 bill.
There are two lessons I learned from this:
- Drinking alcohol is the worst thing you can do with your time, energy, and money. So quit. For good.
- Always ask for a discount at the hospital.
Factually, 80% of medical bills contain mistakes. The next time you’re being discharged from a hospital, be sure to:
- Check your bill.
- Verify the expenses are correct and that they aren’t overcharging you.
- Use fairhealthconsumer.org to check for true medical costs.
- Save thousands when you almost halve your bill!
And to avoid going broke in emergencies like this, don’t forget to add to your emergency fund in your High-Yield Savings Account (which is currently at a 4.30% APY) today.
