💰Give your paycheck a job

Hi there,
One of the worst ways to manage money is deciding what to do with it after it hits your account. Because suddenly that money feels available.
There's $3,000 sitting there.
You pay some bills. Order something you've wanted. Go out over the weekend.
Then at the end of the month, you save whatever happens to be left.
I used to think getting better with money meant making better decisions every day. Now I think the better strategy is needing to make fewer decisions.
Give your paycheck instructions before it arrives. For example:
- Bills → checking account: Enough goes here to cover your normal monthly expenses.
- Emergency savings → HYSA: Until you've built the safety net you need.
- Investing → brokerage or retirement accounts: Automatically, every payday.
- Goals → separate savings: House. Travel. Car. Whatever you're working toward.
- Spending → what's left: That's the money you can actually enjoy without wondering whether you should've invested it instead.
The exact percentages will be different for everyone. That's not the important part. The important part is the order.
Most people: Earn → Spend → Save what's left
I'd rather: Earn → Save & invest → Spend what's left
Once you've built the system, you don't need motivation every payday.
Your money starts moving toward your goals automatically.
And as your income increases? Increase those transfers before increasing your lifestyle.
That's how a raise becomes more wealth instead of just a more expensive life.
You shouldn't have to make 100 good money decisions every month. Simply build a system that makes most of them for you.
