💰Friends or Money?

Hi there,

Recently, I moved out of my parents' house and got my own place in Irvine for a few months. Life looks so different now, but the real reason I moved closer to the big city was to strengthen my network, build a community, and bring myself closer to new opportunities.

This past week, I was able to do just that when I connected with some old friends in the finance sphere. And it reminded me of an important lesson I’ve learned: you are the sum of the five people closest to you.

Sitting at that table, I realized how much growth can happen in just a couple of hours if you surround yourself with the right people. 

Sometimes, people hold you back. If you spend all of your time with someone who is broke, unemployed, and demotivated, you will never be able to become the best version of yourself. Now flip the narrative. If you surround yourself with people who want to win in life, who share their knowledge and resources, who want you to succeed, that’s when real growth happens.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to determine the quality of your network:

• Who are the five closest people to you? This is your network.
• Do your values and goals align with your network?
• Are you inspired by them, and do you learn from them?
• Are you the smartest person in your friend group?  

In short, the fastest way to achieve a goal is to surround yourself with people who are on the same path. And I don’t mean it’s time to ditch your friends. I mean, it’s time to find people who can help you grow, who will grow with you, and help you change your lifestyle accordingly.

Here are some ways to grow and expand your network to match your goals:

• Networking events
• Online forums
• Follow people online who inspire you and unfollowing people who don’t
• Your network’s network
