💰Budget Your Dating

Hi Aanisha,

Dating is expensive. Between looking your best and trying your best, it’s easy to get so caught up in impressing someone else that you forget the goals you’ve set out for yourself.

You’re not going to find your soulmate on a first date - it often takes time, effort, intention, a few shots in the dark, and lots of money.

So if you aren’t already, here’s a hot take you might not like: dating requires budgeting.

For the longest time, I was so focused on building myself that I didn’t have the time or energy to dedicate towards finding a partner. My goal was to first make sure I was financially, mentally, and physically stable before burdening another person with my baggage.

So when I did start dating again, I had to set some hard boundaries for myself to make sure I didn’t undo the life I worked so hard to build.

Here are a few rules I put in place that might help you, too:

  1. No dating until you have saved up a full 3 - 6 months' worth of an emergency fund. Store it in a recommended HYSA for maximum returns.
  2. No fancy restaurants on the first date - get to know the person first at a casual spot and make sure there is potential before going all out.
  3. The bills add up fast. Allocate a separate section of your budget solely towards dating and make sure you stick to it. Start here.
  4. Financial responsibility isn’t just necessary, it’s sexy. Use credit card points and rewards to score freebies and fancy dates. Pick from our recommended cards with the best rewards.
  5. Money is not a first date conversation, but you need to get there eventually. Talk to your partner about how you make money, your spending habits, and your money goals. These conversations will help you align your goals and start a relationship off on the right foot.

So dating can be tiresome and expensive, but it can also be extremely rewarding, and with these guidelines in place, you can still have fun without breaking the bank. All the best and happy hunting!
