đź’°A Lesson That Saved Me Thousands
Aug 13, 2025read time 2 minutes
Hi Aanisha,
One of the greatest lessons my mom taught me is this: you have to look out for yourself. Life as an immigrant wasn’t always ideal, so my mom took it upon herself to prepare us for the real world.
“Trust people but be smart.”
“Do your own research before making a big decision.”
“No one is going to look out for you, but you.”
And as I grew older, I practiced these teachings in every aspect of my life.
Whether it was picking what I wanted to study in college, who I wanted to date, or what I wanted to spend my money on, I always made sure to make calculated decisions with my long-term interests at heart.
Fast forward a few years, and my mom’s life lessons truly paid off.
One of my biggest goals was to help my parents buy their own house. A couple of years ago, the opportunity presented itself, and not only did I contribute, I also managed to save them thousands of dollars in interest by doing one simple thing.
Most people think their banks or lenders have their best interests in mind. But remember: you have to always look out for yourself. When the bank gave us our offer, something just didn’t sit right with me. So I decided to do some research myself.
By taking 10 minutes to compare mortgage rates across the industry, I was able to find a better deal at a lower interest rate. And 1% in mortgage terms means tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.
The tool that’s been my secret weapon as of late? A mortgage comparison website that lets me see real offers from multiple lenders in minutes. It’s made me feel in control of the process instead of just going with whatever I’m told.
So if you’re even thinking about buying a house, here’s my advice: always compare first and start here.
