💰6 money rules I wish someone taught me sooner

Hi there,

If your parents or school never really taught you how money works, you’re not alone. I had to figure it out myself. I started early, made plenty of mistakes, learned fast, and eventually built a million-dollar net worth in my twenties.

These are the six money rules that made the biggest difference for me. Simple. Boring. Life-changing.

1. Stop using a debit card. Start using a credit card.
Used correctly, a credit card is a tool, not a trap. It helps you build credit, which matters when you want to buy a car, a home, or borrow at good rates. The rules are non-negotiable: never carry a balance, pay it off in full every month, and don’t spend money you don’t already have.

2. Open your accounts in the right order.
Keep it clean and simple:

1. A checking account
2. A high-yield savings account
3. A Roth IRA
4. A taxable brokerage account

 This order gives you flexibility, safety, and long-term growth.

3. Build a real emergency fund.
Aim for three to six months of living expenses. This is not investing money. This is safety money. Park it in your high-yield savings account so it earns interest while it waits.

4. Once you’re safe, start investing.
This is where your money goes to work. Start with broad, boring index funds like VOO, QQQ, or SCHD. SCHD is great if you like getting paid dividends for doing nothing. No guessing. No day trading. Just consistency.

5. Live below your means.
Don’t buy things to impress people you don’t even like. This is how high earners stay broke. I’ve met doctors making $300,000 a year who still live paycheck to paycheck. Income doesn’t make you wealthy. Habits do.

6. Grow your income by growing your skills.
Read. Learn. Take courses. Watch videos. Get better at something valuable. If you have skills and mastery, you’ll never truly worry about money. Money follows value, and value comes from what you can do.

That’s it. No hacks. No shortcuts. Just rules that work.
