One thing that changed my life more than any investment strategy was this: who you spend time with matters.

Early on, I didn’t think much about it. Friends were just… friends. But as I started working toward bigger goals, I noticed something. Certain people lift you up. Others quietly hold you back.

Over time, I learned to recognize the types of people who slowly drain your growth. The obvious ones come first. People who complain constantly. People who are negative about everything. People who are lazy.

Standards are contagious. If the people around you accept doing the bare minimum, it slowly becomes normal.

Then there are the harder ones to spot. People who lie. People who always play the victim. People who are secretly jealous of your progress.

You can’t build anything meaningful without trust, accountability, and support.

Some people only appear when they need something from you. Others bring constant drama, gossip, and chaos into your life. And some simply have no goals at all. No direction. No ambition. It’s difficult to grow when the people around you are standing still.

But the most dangerous type of person took me the longest to recognize.

The discourager. They call it “being realistic.” They say they’re just trying to protect you. They tell you to play it safe. But what they’re really doing is projecting their own fear.

When you talk about investing, starting a business, asking for more, or thinking bigger, they push back. Not because your ideas are bad, but because they would never take that risk themselves.

I’ve had people like this in my life. And when I finally created distance from that environment, everything changed. My focus improved. My confidence improved. My results improved. Success isn’t just about what you do. It’s also about what you allow around you. Choose your environment carefully. It shapes more than you realize.
